The beach is a 2.4 kilometer (5 mile) strip offering world-renowned surfing and more. Like the metropolitan areas of Costa Rica, Jacó offers most services, such as a post office, a health center, and branches of major banks. Additionally, there are plenty of affordable surf shops, hotels, and restaurants for travelers on a budget, as well as those who want to live a little more luxuriously. Activities include surfing, swimming, deep sea fishing, ATV tours, bike rentals, horseback riding tours, crocodile safaris, national parks and reserves, boat and kayak tours, white water rafting, canopy tours and a popular nightlife. With everything there is to offer, it's no wonder Jacó is as popular as ever. In the surrounding areas, Playa Herradura, just 4.4 miles (7 km) to the north, offers a quieter environment than Playa de Jaco. Additionally, just south of Jacó is Playa Hermosa, a quieter 10-kilometer section (6 miles) of black sand beach loved by beachgoers and surfers alike. This is where the Quicksilver International Championship is held every year in August. The Playa Hermosa National Wildlife Refuge is the beach of choice for olive ridley sea turtles that come ashore to nest each year. If you want a hotel with a quiet location, these surrounding coastal towns are recommended. The Carara Biological Reserve (Reserva Biológica Carara) is located just 15 km (9.3 mi) north of Jacó. With several kilometers of trails open to visitors (some only with a tour group), it is a great place to observe much of Costa Rica's wildlife. Early morning or evening is usually the best time to see the wealth of scarlet macaws resting among the mangroves. It is also possible to see caimans, white-faced monkeys, peccaries, coatis and a wide variety of birds. The park opens at 7 am and closes at 5 pm. The cost of admission is $6. The Tárcoles River (RioTárcoles), which borders the park and empties into the Pacific Ocean, is an incredible place to witness the American crocodile up close. Boat trips are offered to see the crocodiles, many of which reach several meters in length! At the mouth of the Tárcoles, the Guacalillo mangrove plays a vital role in the survival of many species of wildlife that can be observed here. Manuel Antonio National Park is a short drive from Jacó as it sits majestically, 43 miles (69 km) to the south. The Punta Leona Wildlife Refuge (Refugio de Punta Leona) is another place where visitors They have a good chance of seeing wildlife, which is found along the road north from Jacó towards the town of Tárcoles. However, in Jacó there are concerns about drugs, crime and prostitution. Being aware of your surroundings and using common sense will help you avoid undesirable situations. You can walk around the city very easily or you can take red taxis and pay the service fee, which is very reasonable.Additionally, you can take buses to go to some of the main attractions. Monte Carlo is centrally located. No car required. There is a supermarket just 100 meters away. Plus you can walk to all the famous restaurants, shops, banks and the beach is just 3 blocks away. The Monte Carlo staff will help you organize your entire vacation. We pick you up at the airport, rent a condo, book your tours, help you with things to do in the city, ideas on how to discover Costa Rica and we also organize return transportation to the airport.
